A new logo for Pepsi

Notice the 'grins' in the logo? It's about the enjoyment you get from drinking a Pepsi. The white gap widens for different drinks. Pepsi has taken a very space-age look with the new can design and typeface. I'm not sure if I like it...yet.

Weekend Stuff

A few days ago, I added this post about some clever library ideas. Thanks to Aloi, I found this perfect addition to my some day perfect library - perfect for curling up with a good book

Jim Rosenau creates functional art from old, discarded books. And he's got some really cool shelves for sale on his site. I love how he creates themes from book titles.

On the book front, I posted this about Joanne Harris' follow-up to Chocolat in April last year. However, that was for the UK edition. The US edition will be out in April 2008 and under a different name.

No news yet when Susan Hill's The Man in the Mask will finally appear on US shores and if it will have the same title. It's still absent from bookstores here.

Dream libraries

These are some of the cleverest bookshelves I've seen. The first one in a Tokyo apartment wraps around and provides privacy for the bedroom. Falling asleep and waking up to books...Nice!

This other one is a bookshelf built into a staircase that ascends to a loft. I so so want this. But I think I'll need a loft and a second floor first.

The book cave

Now this is one clever, unusual piece of furniture that I'd love to have in my home. But I'd line it with purple though.

Breast Cancer Month

These gorgeous t-shirts are designed by Sidsel Gaustadne, a designer in Denmark, who created them for the The Danish Cancer Society. If you're visiting her lovely country, you may still be able to find them in the stores. I was lucky enough to get 2 pink ones from her Etsy shop and they're on their way to me soon. You can read more about the designs and Sidsel on her blog.

Designed by:

For about US$45,000 you can live in this micro compact home that is just a 2.6m cube. It's designed for one or two people, and comes with TWO compact double beds in a living/dining space, shower and toilet cubicle, a fully operational kitchen and everything needed to keep you wired and connected. It's stackable and doesn't compromise the environment. A great idea to solve housing shortage in many land scarce areas, although the price would have to come down considerably for it to be more afforadable.

I think this would be a great getaway or retreat space where you have the minimum of clutter to distract you. But woah! This is way smaller than my ultra cheap student digs in college! I don't think I'd be comfortable living in it 24x7.

I just love this lamp by Asli Ingin, a Turkish designer based in Istanbul. That dappled light would be so restful at night, don't you think?

Australian art

Over 50,000 polystyrene balls went into this installation piece by Australian artist Nike Savvas. Entitled "Atomix - Full of Love, Full of Wonder", it's her representation of shimmering light and colors in the Australian landscape. You can see it at the New South Wales Art Gallery in Sydney. Click on the picture for a larger image.

Illustration Friday: Song

It's a little grungy and a tad lopsided right now, but there is a whole chorus of songs within.

Check out these sites...

But first, hide your credit cards. Take notes (preferably in a Moleskine). Then dream of a place furnished with everything you see here.

I've had lovely daydreams about mine: heavy in print, rich in color, luxe yet with a laid-back style. So...how do you see your DREAM space, hmm?

Illustration Friday - Holiday

As Christmas is nearly over, the next big holiday for us in Singapore, and for Chinese people everywhere, will be Chinese New Year at the end of January 2006. Tomorrow, the Christmas decorations will come down and the Chinese New Year ones will start popping up. Chinataown will be THE place to go for all the yummy goodies.

Chinese New Year is the time for visiting family, exchanging 'angpows' or red packets with money, usually given by married people to children. Older folk get 2 oranges from the younger generation, symbolising longlife and prosperity.

Illustration Friday: Imagine

Just something I 'sketched' for Illustration Friday while fooling around with the new Photoshop.

Falling maple leaves against a blue sky - it's so easy to imagine that I'm somewhere cold, bundled up in layers of wool, sipping on hot chocolate. Instead I'm in hot humid Singapore, staring at pictures of falling leaves, imagining...

Illustration - Bed

For the last few days, I've just been vegging, chilling, relaxing...basically doing absolutely nothing. Then Janey and Iliana both dropped comments, wanting to see illustrations. Janey even suggested drawing the couch I was vegging on. LOL!

Ok. Here's something then.

My fingers itched and I drew...my bed. Not exactly the couch, but it's the one thing I see as I look directly across from my laptop. I love this bed. Its got 4 pillows - the back two are somewhere between hard and soft for support while the first two are filled with down and feathers. The body pillow is a perfect cuddle, and that black cushion is usually on my desk chair but I threw it there for now.

Rendered in Pilot G-2 and coloured pencils with some color adjustments in Photoshop.

Illustration Friday - Cold

An abstract of 3 ice cubes done in Photoshop. They have magical properties. If you look at them long enough, you won't feel the heat. Perfect for hot muggy Singapore!

Illustration Friday - Lost

Lost and alone on some forgotten highway
Travelled by many, remembered by few...

-- John Denver

I drew this while being a couch potato last night, and now realise that the perspectives for some arrows are a bit off. Ink, in my Molekskine.

Water the ivy

Another doodle (among others) done this evening during a mild lightning storm. Did this also to remind me to water Dad's plants as the gardener is not coming around on Sunday.

Illustration Friday - Float

I float. Before another whirlpool drags me down, I float into the blue. What a week it's been and this weekend is just what I need to restore my chi before the stresses of a new week engulf me.

My first submission to Illustration Friday. Am a former graphic designer who's now trying to re-acquaint myself with sketching and doodling, and all things that sent me to design school in the first place.

My Sketch Pouch

Been doodling again lately, thanks to all the inspiration I've had from the many illustrated blogs out there. Take a look at the list in my left column and you'll find some pretty amazing ones who are on my 'must read' list.

Note: My sketchbook here is the Fabriano Artist's Journal. I do have a Moleskine notebook but that doesn't take washes well - the paper warps quite badly. I heard the Moleskine sketchbook isn't that good for watercolor either. However the Fabriano was rated quite highly by several sites for light washes.

The Girl with Feathers in her Hat

This beautiful illustration is courtesy of Janey. She sent me this postcard after I signed up for inclusion in her postcard project list. It will now be laminated and pinned in my cubicle at the office on Monday.

Pop over to her website to see more of her art. And don't forget to say 'Hi!'
