Friday, March 26, 2004 It WAS a long week!
Another week which sort of flew by with a thousand and one things to do...and all with close deadlines. Working at Vacain this week WAS fun and I think I'll be there again next week too. And YES! their very difficult client did like the copy I wrote for their ad. YEAH!!! This means I'll get some stuff to do from them. Hmm...seems everything is turning out all 'write' (pun intended!). LOL!
Heard that the KL Zouk trip was a success with lots of enquiries about Fireflys. Although the media was there, nothing was on the news tonight. Maybe tomorrow night. I've been facing some tough questions this week about myself...about where and how far I intend to go with my 'free agency' status now. I started Design Indigo under less than ideal circumstances, never expecting it to last. To my surprise, it has...and has been doing ok, I might add (touch wood!). I love that time is my own now, and I no longer work in toxic work environments. But I do miss my CPF and having colleagues around me for lunch and chats. I have to admit that I am open to opportunities but I'm determined to be VERY picky. Anything that will take me out of this comfort zone will have to be extremely inviting and rewarding in more ways than just financially. I'm not even sure what that will be, but I'm hopping that a lightning bolt will strike when that opportunity presents itself. Monday, March 22, 2004 ...and it's only Monday!!!
This is going to be a looooong week. As it is, I didn't have much of a weekend with a wedding this past Saturday and a photo shoot Sunday morning. Arrghh!! I now have tons of work to do...and there are so little hours in a day. I did say that this year will see me working hard and no grumbling but I'm dying for at least 2 days off to just goof off and do ABSOLUTELY nothing! You know, kick back with a book, veg out in front of the TV or just go roaming in Borders. And not at any one time to turn on my Mac. Sigh...it looks like busy will be around for awhile. And I'm not complaining...just wishful.
Seems like I'll be stationed at Vacain for most of this week too. Joelyn asked me my schedule for this and next week. Which is great cause I love working there with those guys. Need to remind her that I do copy-writing too, as I think she forgot when she asked me about a project today. Right now, I'm doing about 70% design and 30% copy work. I'm hoping to change that one day to 30% design and 70% copy. So now I've got to market myself in that direction. Fireflys is performing this week in KL for the opening of Zouk's first overseas club. I'm not going cause of some jobs that I need to babysit here. But in a way, I'm relieved cause I won't be stressed out stage managing this event. It's fun, believe me...but if you're Virgo with an controlling streak, it's not a good thing. I don't think I stress the others...but I stress myself. Oh yes...the wedding! My cousin MaeLyn got married this past Saturday to New Zealander Andy. What tickled me about it was, true to the spirit of the modern independent woman, MaeLyn popped the question to him! Andy said that he was, well, floored. She did it in a verse and it took several readings before he understood the question and said 'Yes'. The wedding took place at Raffles Hotel at 5pm with the reception following at Equinox, in a private function room with a fabulous view from the 69th floor. I couldn't leave till around midnight, hence my lost Saturday. Wednesday, March 17, 2004 Nearly 100% again
Finally feeling a lot better after the last couple of days. Only today, I'm chasing down some deadlines...grrr!!
Happy St Paddy's folks! And now, for a bit of fun...Live Long and Prosper! My Star Trek Klingon name is Kiosan Keedera. Sunday, March 14, 2004 Arrgh!!!
feeling utterly yucky today. nothing is more depressing that having nothing to write about. Sigh!
Saturday, March 13, 2004 Yawn...the long way home.![]() It was another long day yesterday with meetings. But it included some fun too. Ees, Xin and myself met at Molly's for Fish & Chips, Shepherds' Pie, Guinness, Kilkenny and Cider; stuffing ourselves as we poured over the festival ideas and notes. There's so much to do and seems like we're standing at the end of a very long tunnel. And right now, I can't see that speck in the far distance. But I know we'll get to it and burst out with something new and different. Wednesday, March 10, 2004 It's been one of those days again...
I played tourist again today. A client called up yesterday requesting an urgent meeting to review a brochure design. I sighed. Not because I'll be doing a third visual for this incredibly picky man (do you know that he even measures the border between the edge of the paper and the text and insists that 0.8" is the appropriate border distance!!??? He deduced that number from other brochures he measured...go figure!) but because the meeting is in...TUAS (way in the WEST)!! And I live in CHANGI (way over in the EAST)!!! AND...it gets better...it was at 11am. So that means getting up at 8.30am to catch the 9.40 MRT to Jurong East to catch a cab to his office!!! Sigh!! So there I was rumbling along on the East/West line realising that the rumbling was also my stomach. No breakfast or even coffee...just in case I had to 'go'. Then this Auntie enters the train carrying a plastic bag filled with containers of some delicious smelling stuff. I think it was breakfast for her and some colleagues. I tried not to think about it and turned up the volume of my iPod. Ha! Like it helped! *Duh!* Anyways...after the meeting was over, met with Xin who had just finished a class, for some strange but nice Raspberry Tea Frappe at Starbucks Simei. It should have been Borders, Xin...next time, yah? Haven't bought a book in ages. Well, actually, since December and that for me is like going cold turkey. Am itching to pick up a paperback soon...nothing planned. So if you've got a good book recommendation, please let me know.
Monday, March 08, 2004 My New Toy![]() I finally did it! I got my digital camera. Murphy my pet was the first pix I took after spending some hours fiddling with the controls. After playing around with a regular SLR, a digital camera does take some getting used to. For one, I've got to constantly turn on the menu to change my ISO, aperture, shutter or even the flash intensity. But being the control freak that I am...I love it! :-) ![]() This pix was from a a fun night at the Mitre. Yes, you read that right. I finally took Xin's suggestion and decided to give it a chance. And had a good time too. It was especially nice in the garden later with several bottles of wine, good group of United Nations friends and talk. Actually looking forward to the next time. Monday, March 01, 2004 Here's to the best of times...!
A bunch of us met up for pancakes last night at Ems. It's becoming an annual gathering of pancake lovers before Lent (only this year it happened later cause of schedules). Poor Ems spent most of the evening calling "Next!" out of the kitchen as a signal for each of us to go in with an empty plate then return to the table with all kinds of yummy toppings. I realised, watching us last night, how long our friendships have lasted. And one thing brought us all together, Vacain Design. My ex company, Jim and Ian's current was the catalyst in this bonding. We all, at one point or another, either worked there or knew someone who did, thus getting to know everybody else in the group. We've all come through much together and I think, we know each other so well. One word sets off laughter, a glance sparks protest, someone's idiosyncrasies brings on the smiles. I don't think anyone in this group has seen the movie, The Big Chill (from the '80s) with Glenn Close, Kevin Klein and William Hurt about a group of very close friends who reunite when tragedy struck. That was my favourite movie from that period. And this group kinda reminds me of that. Cheers!
